Insomnia

Symptoms of Insomnia

Some of the common symptoms of insomnia are difficulty falling asleep at night, waking up in the middle of the night, feeling tired during daytime, loss of concentration, difficulty focusing on work, and feeling irritated, anxious, and depressed during the day.

Natural Cures

Try some of these tips to prevent insomnia:

Ensure that your bedroom is well-ventilated, clutter-free, and as comfortable as possible. Put up curtains to block bright light.
Avoid taking daytime naps.
Maintain a regular sleep schedule. Try falling asleep and waking up at a fixed time everyday.
Avoid consuming stimulants like nicotine, coffee, and alcohol right before going to bed.
Be physically active. Regular exercise will not only do wonders for your fitness level, but it will also exhaust you, causing you to fall asleep sooner.
Have a light dinner. Avoid consuming heavy meals right before going to bed.
Try relaxation techniques such as listening to soothing music, meditation, yoga, or other such practices to calm your nerves.

People suffering from insomnia should also try some of the following natural cures to relax and successfully sleep for longer periods:

Lavender

Lavender is a calming herb that also strengthens the nervous system, so it relieves anxiety and stress. Lavender is extensively used in aromatherapy. It is considered to be a therapeutic herb that helps to ease anxiety, fatigue, headaches, and insomnia. Here is how to use lavender to cure insomnia:

Add a few drops of essential oil of lavender (five to ten drops) to your bathwater and soak in it for a few minutes before going to sleep.
Infuse fresh or dried lavender herb in boiling water and consume this tea two to three times each day.
Blend ten drops of essential oil of lavender into one fluid ounce of vegetable oil and massage it into your skin.

Sew sachets of dried lavender flowers into your pillow cover so that the soothing aroma envelopes you while you sleep.

Valerian

Juice extracted from fresh valerian root is believed to have sedative properties and has been traditionally used by herbalists to cure insomnia. It is also relaxing and soporific (sleep inducing), relieves spasms, calms the digestion, and lowers blood pressure. Here are a few suggestions for using this herb to treat insomnia:

Take one teaspoon of grated valerian root, one teaspoon of dried mint, one half of a teaspoon of chamomile, and one half of a teaspoon of dried lavender flowers. Infuse these ingredients in one pint of boiling water and let it steep for at least 15 minutes. Strain and consume this tea three times each day for one week.
Alternatively, prepare valerian tea in the morning by adding two teaspoons of grated valerian root in two cups of boiling water. Let it steep until the evening. Strain and warm the concoction. Add one teaspoon of honey and drink one cup of this tea after dinner and one cup before going to bed.

Chamomile

Juice extracted from fresh valerian root is believed to have sedative properties and has been traditionally used by herbalists to cure insomnia. It is also relaxing and soporific (sleep inducing), relieves spasms, calms the digestion, and lowers blood pressure. Here are a few suggestions for using this herb to treat insomnia:

Massage your neck and shoulders with a few drops of chamomile oil. You can also use essential oil of lavender, sandalwood, or rose for this purpose.
Prepare chamomile tea using fresh or dried herb or use store-bought tea bags that may have other calming herbs mixed with chamomile, and drink this tea every night. Stir in one tablespoon of pure honey if desired
Add chamomile to your bathwater or use herbal soap, body cleanser, or lotion containing essential oil of chamomile before going to bed at night.

Additional soothing herbal drinks

Warm milk and honey, perhaps with a dash of cinnamon, is an ideal and time-tested drink to consume at bedtime.
Infuse three hop cones or heads in a cup of boiling water, strain and consume this tea to ward off insomnia.
