Migraine

Symptoms of Migraine

The term “migraine” is often used as a blanket term that refers to several types of headaches. Some individuals experience a visual aura before a migraine attack. These visual auras are described as bright shimmering lights around objects or at the edges of the field of vision, zigzag lines, wavy images, or hallucinations. Some people experience a blackout and temporary vision loss. However, in most cases, migraine attacks do not involve the appearance of an aura. The typical symptoms of migraine attacks are persistent and severe headaches that last from between four to 72 hours, unilateral headaches (affecting one side of the head at a time), throbbing or pulsating pain, intensification of headaches upon performing any routine activity, nausea and/or vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and tingling sensation in the body.

Natural Cures

To alleviate a migraine attack, the patient should be immediately moved to a quiet and dark room. Then, the breathing pattern should be regularized because migraine often causes anxiety and hyperventilation. Try some of the following natural cures that aid in treating migraines:

Honey, lemon, and ginger

Honey, lemon, and ginger have remarkable medicinal properties. Prepare soothing lemon, ginger, and honey tea by mixing the juice of one half of a lemon, two teaspoons of honey, and expressed juice of a small chunk of fresh ginger root in one cup of hot water. Alternatively, dissolve two teaspoons of honey in one half of a glass of warm water. Repeat in 20 minutes if the migraine persists.

Lavender

There are numerous benefits of lavender. This aromatic herb is used for treating a wide range of ailments including insomnia, anxiety, depression, and mood disturbances. It can also be used for treating migraines. Apply a single drop of pure, undiluted lavender oil on each temple or behind each ear. Additionally, place two to three drops of undiluted lavender oil on the pillow where the head will rest.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids possess excellent anti-inflammatory properties and are particularly effective in reducing the inflammation of the nerves and arteries in the brain, which greatly lessens the severity of a migraine attack. Consume more “healthy” fats in your diet such as olive oil, flaxseed oil, and oily fish like mackerel, sardines, and halibut to obtain the recommended quantity of omega-3 fatty acids.

Lifestyle and migraine

Migraine may not be prevented or avoided completely, but the frequency of migraine attacks may be controlled. Here are a few suggestions.

Identify the factors that trigger your migraine attacks and avoid them.
Follow a regular sleeping pattern.
Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet. Do not skip meals. Follow an effective eating plan.
Learn to manage stress. Try yoga, tai chi, meditation, and other such stress-relieving techniques.
Maintain physically fitness.
Women may consider alternative birth control measures if their migraines are triggered by the imbalance in estrogen levels in their bodies. They should avoid birth control pills and should consider other options for hormone replacement therapy.
