Asthma

Symptoms of Asthma

The warning signs of Asthma can be visible before the condition is fully developed. Some indicators that an individual may be suffering from asthma are:

Changes in breathing pattern or unusually fast and shallow breathing Glassy or watery eyes
Frequent sneezing Dry mouth
Frequent mood swings Restlessness
Congestion Increased heart beat
Itchy throat or nose Pale complexion
Increased and unexplained fatigue Dark circles under eyes
Poor tolerance of physical exercise Difficulty sleeping
Continual or frequent headache

The purchase of a peak flow meter is recommended. A peak flow meter is a small, easy-to-use instrument that measures the peak expiratory flow and this number indicates how quickly the patient can exert air following maximum inhalation. This instrument aids in determining if the lungs are functioning optimally. As asthma progresses, the numbers registered on the peak flow meter are between 50 to 80 percent of the normal figures.

The inability of the lungs to function optimally is a result of constriction in the airways. As asthma advances and the airflow is further restricted, the symptoms aggravate further and could be life-threatening. Symptoms of severe asthma include:

Shortness of breath after basic activities such as walking. Breathing may also be quicker and more shallow than normal
Severe coughing, wheezing and tightness in the chest
Difficulty in talking and concentrating
Nasal flaring while breathing
Hunched shoulders or drooping posture
Bluish or grey tint on the skin may develop, beginning from the area around the mouth
Visible contraction in the neck and the area below the ribs while breathing
Further decrease in peak flow numbers that do not exceed 50%

Natural Cures

Currently there is no permanent cure for asthma because the primary cause for the condition is unknown. However, the condition can be controlled through bronchodilators that loosen up airway constrictions, drugs and some environmental changes.

There are also some remedies that may be created with common household items. Natural cures that can aid in gaining control over asthma and that can increase the patient’s quality of life are:

Honey

Consume one teaspoon of honey with warm water every day to experience relief from asthma.
Mix one teaspoon of honey with one half of a teaspoon of cinnamon powder. Consume this during the start of the morning or immediately before going to bed at night.
Heat one teaspoon of honey and add one quarter of a teaspoon of pure turmeric powder. Mix the substance and consume this paste twice each day.
Hold a jar of honey under the nose of anyone suffering from an asthma attack. Breathing after inhaling honey can aid in easing the patient’s breathing and can aid in correcting the shallowness in breath.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Bronchial asthma may be cured by consuming two tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar in an eight ounce cup of water each day.
Apple Cider Vinegar can also be consumed undiluted. Swallow one spoonful before each meal.

Garlic
Garlic can aid in alleviating asthma symptoms beginning from the initial stages. To utilize garlic:

Boil ten garlic cloves in 30 milliliters of milk and consume it once each day.
Add two garlic cloves to steaming ginger tea. Drink this tea every morning and every evening.

Diet and Asthma

Certain foods are commonly believed to trigger asthma attacks and reactions. Therefore, avoid or minimize the intake of the following

Foods containing additives and preservatives such as benzonates, sulphites, MSG, gallates and colorings E102, E104 and E110. These substances can be found in jams, beverages, ice creams and other processed foods.
Foods containing yeast or mold such as blue cheese and breads.
Cereal, cow’s milk, eggs, fish, soy, nuts, beer, wine and cider.

Some foods can reduce the severity of an asthma attack. These foods can also assist in thinning the mucous and dilating the air passages to ensure smooth airflow. These foods are:

Spicy and pungent foods such as mustard, ginger, garlic, onion and chili pepper.
Foods containing omega three fatty acids such as salmon and mackerel.
Foods rich in vitamin C such as broccoli, kiwi fruit and lemon.
Alkali-forming foods and foods rich in vitamin B and magnesium such as green leafy vegetables, pulses, sprouted seeds, sunflower seeds and dried figs.
Consume water every two hours each day to assist in cleansing the body.

Stress Management

It is crucial to effectively cope with stress because stress can incite an asthma attack. To reduce stress, an individual should exercise, practice yoga, and practice stress management techniques such as keeping a daily journal and creating a list of goals. Bodily massages can also assist in releasing stress and tension.
