Symptoms of Back Pain
As mentioned earlier, there are two types
of back pain: acute and chronic
Acute
back pain:
Acute back pain is the more common
type of back pain. It remains for
a short period of approximately
six to eight weeks but it involves
sudden, intermittent and stinging
pain. It generally causes severe
pain in one specific area of the
back such as the left, right, center
or lower area. |
Chronic back pain:
Chronic
back pain occurs when back pain
remains for more than three months.
It is not as common as acute back
pain and it usually occurs in the
lower area of back. Pain may gradually
shift to the legs. The patient of
chronic back pain suffers from ongoing
pain.
Some of the symptoms of chronic
back pain are:
|
Severe
pain in the back |
|
Stinging
and burning sensation |
|
Difficulty
in performing normal activities
|
|
Inability
to sit or stand for a prolonged
period of time |
|
Difficulty
in sleeping |
|
Feeling
numbness |
|
Fever
along with the pain (in extreme
cases) |
|
Natural Cures
Beneficial
natural remedies that can aid in the treatment
of back pain are:
Garlic
Oil
A
massage involving garlic oil is an effective,
natural and inexpensive treatment that
may be utilized to cope with back pain.
To effectively use garlic oil:
|
Place
approximately ten small pieces of
garlic in a pan. |
|
Add coconut,
sesame or mustard oil to the pan and
fry the garlic pieces over a low flame. |
|
Remove the
pan from the flame once the garlic
pieces become brown and let the mixture
cool. |
|
Strain the
mixture and apply the oil on the back
for three hours. |
Heating
Pads and Ice Packs
|
Begin
with cold treatment and apply it to
the back as long as the spasm persists.
Apply the heating pads after the spasms
and acute pain subside because this
will aid in loosening the tight back
muscles. Ensure that the application
does not exceed 20 minutes in duration. |
|
Do not apply
ice directly to the skin. Instead,
ensure that there is a protective
barrier between the ice and skin,
such as a towel or a napkin. |
Herbal teas
Chamomile,
St. John's Wart, Borage, Lemon Balm and
Valerian are some of the herbs that have
a calming effect on strained muscles.
Consume one to two cups of tea created
from any of these herbs on a daily basis.
Simple
Changes in Lifestyle
Acute lifestyle changes are very beneficial
in reducing back pain. Some crucial changes
are:
|
Maintain
proper posture while sitting, standing,
walking or driving. Do not slouch. |
|
Turn sideways
by moving the entire body rather than
twisting at the waist. |
|
Avoid stooping
while lifting. Alternatively, squat
and then proceed to lift the object. |
|
Push, rather
than pull, heavy objects. |
|
Take regular
breaks and stretch the body if sitting
for a long period of time is necessary. |
|
Store heavy
items on shelves at the waist level. |
|
Sleep on a
firm mattress and avoid sleeping face
down. |
|
Obtain frequent
back massages aid in relieving tension
and pain |
Healthy
Lifestyle
Vitamins
and minerals are vital for strengthening
bones and muscles of the body and backbones
and back muscles are no exception. Vitamins
A, B12, C, D, K and minerals like calcium,
iron and magnesium are all important.
Consume food that can provide a sufficient
quantity of all of these nutrients, such
as dairy products, citrus fruits, pork,
green leafy vegetables, egg yolks, fish
oils, whole grains, and dried fruits.
Consume small frequent meals rather than
large isolated meals and consume fiber
to avoid constipation. Maintain hydration
within the body because the body consists
of 70% water and sufficient hydration
contributes to the health of the inter-vertebral
disc and that of other back-related structures
and functions. Avoid smoking and excessive
alcohol use. Maintain a healthy weight
and include exercise in your daily routine.
