Bad Breath/ Halitosis

Symptoms of Bad Breath/ Halitosis

The symptoms of bad breath are offensive odor from the mouth, coated surface of the tongue, indications or hints from surrounding people (wincing, turning away, or scrunching up their noses), and dry mouth. Another way to recognize bad breath is to lick one's wrist and identify a detectable odor when the saliva dries.

Preventing Halitosis/Bad Breath

Most cases of bad breath can be cured by following a proper dental care regimen. For extreme cases of bad breath, consult a physician to determine the underlying medical condition that causes bad breath. You can, however, follow a few simple steps to cope with bad breath:

Drink plenty of water to maintain moisture in the mouth.
Consume fresh fruits and vegetables. Limit the intake of fermented foods such as cheese, baked goods, and vinegar and minimize the intake of dairy products, sugar, and alcohol.
Properly brush teeth after every meal with a good quality, soft-bristled tooth brush.
Floss at least once each day.
Clean the tongue by scraping it gently with a toothbrush after teeth are brushed.
Gargle with mouthwash after brushing teeth.
Visit a dentist at least twice each year and obtain professional teeth-cleaning treatment.

Natural Cures

Masking bad breath will not eliminate the problem. It is important to treat the root cause of bad breath in order to permanently eliminate the condition. Use the following natural remedies to cure halitosis or bad breath:

Natural mouth fresheners

Several aromatic herbs and spices have been traditionally used to treat bad breath. Some of these natural products have unique chemical compositions that can cure the underlying causes of bad breath.

Chew a couple of cloves, fennel seeds, and anise seeds after meals to eliminate bad breath. Cloves can also aid in curing toothache and gum disease that can cause bad breath.
Chew on parsley sprigs, mint leaves, holy basil (tulsi) leaves, a small piece of fresh gingerroot, apple slices, carrots, and celery sticks between meals and snacks to neutralize the odor of the mouth.
Sip on herbal teas throughout the day. Choose herbs such as peppermint, chamomile, cinnamon, sage, cardamom, and fennel.
One drop of pure peppermint oil on the tongue is said to be an instant cure for bad breath.
Lemon is also considered to be an effective natural cure for treating bad breath. Suck on a slice of lemon after meals to neutralize the odor in the mouth. Follow this remedy after consuming strong smelling foods such as onion and garlic.

Vitamins and minerals

A deficiency of vitamin C can have a destructive effect on the oral tissues and result in the proliferation of odor-causing bacteria. Consume foods that are rich in vitamin C such as kiwi fruits, oranges, lemons, broccoli, and bell peppers or consider taking Vitamin C supplements. Other suggested nutrients for bad breath include vitamins E, D, and B, and minerals such as calcium, fluoride, and zinc. Use oral care products such as mouthwashes and toothpastes that contain these minerals as their active ingredients.
