Bronchitis

Symptoms of Bronchitis

As mentioned earlier, there are two types of Bronchitis: acute and chronic. Acute Bronchitis, the most common type of Bronchitis, surfaces quickly and has severe symptoms. However, it remains for a short span at the maximum of a few weeks. It can start with a dry cough, wheezing, headache and mild fever. An individual suffering from Acute Bronchitis may experience shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, and may feel unusually cold. The coughing is accompanied by thick, yellow or green mucous in large quantities.

Chronic Bronchitis is characterized as a long-term ailment. It may be treated but it cannot be completely cured. It recurs at frequent intervals and most symptoms of Chronic Bronchitis are the same as those of Acute Bronchitis. However, most people who are suffering from Chronic Bronchitis do not suffer from fever or chills. Symptoms of Chronic Bronchitis may persist for at least three months.

Natural Cures

If an individual develops Acute Bronchitis more than once, his risk of developing Chronic Bronchitis is increased. This can severely disrupt a person’s lifestyle. Here are some ways through which you can reduce the chances of developing Bronchitis:

Stop smoking. Smoke irritates the internal walls of the entire respiratory system, which makes you more vulnerable to respiratory diseases like Bronchitis.
Avoid exposure to irritants, such as smog, dust, pollen, pollution and second-hand smoke. Children have weaker immune systems than adults so they need stronger precautions.

Prevention is useful, but if you still contract Bronchitis, you can try some natural and easily-accessible remedies to sooth the infection.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil is known for its warming properties and it is used to alleviate respiratory disorders. To properly use Eucalyptus Oil you should do at least one of the following:

Release a few drops of Eucalyptus Oil onto a soft washcloth and soak the washcloth in warm water. Close your eyes to avoid irritation from the Eucalyptus Oil and place the washcloth over your nasal passage. Breathe through the washcloth to inhale the soothing oil. Repeat this activity every few hours for three to four minutes.
Rub a few drops of Eucalyptus oil onto your hands and inhale it directly from your palms.
Boil water in a saucepan and release a couple of drops of Eucalyptus oil in it. Turn off the stove and inhale the steam that is emanating from the water to get immediate relief from difficulty in breathing.

Herbs and Spices

Herbs and spices that can be found in your pantry have the ability to do a lot more than add flavor to your food. They may be used as alternative medicines to treat a variety of ailments. To use common herbs and spices to alleviate Bronchitis you should do at least one of the following:

Create tea by mixing a teaspoon of dried thyme, sage and hyssop into a cup of hot water. Add honey if you desire to do so and drink this tea throughout the day.
Grind dry ginger, black pepper and cloves, each in an equal proportion, and use a teaspoon of this powder to make a soothing tea. This tea can be consumed thrice a day. If you choose not to use this mixture for tea, use a teaspoon of honey to create a paste of this mixture and swallow it.
Onion is known for its expectoration qualities and can aid in thinning the mucous. Swallow a tablespoon of raw onion juice in the morning to see its power in relieving bronchial symptoms.
Cook homemade chicken soup and add garlic or ginger to aid in the thinning of mucous.
Garlic is effective in combating microbes and it may be consumed raw, consumed as an extract, or consumed in pill form.

Diet and Lifestyle for Bronchitis

Some medical practitioners believe in the healing and restorative power of orange juice for curing Acute Bronchitis. It is recommended that the patient fast on orange juice and water until the symptoms subside. Thereafter, an all-fruit diet should be followed for two to three days.

For Chronic Bronchitis, the patient can begin with an all-fruit diet for five to seven days and proceed with a well-balanced diet emphasizing cereals, nuts, raw vegetables, and fresh fruits. The patient should drink a glass of water every two waking hours as water is known to thin mucous secretions.

When suffering from bronchitis, the patient should avoid foods that incite mucous production, such as dairy products, chocolate, bananas, and fried foods.

Regular exercise is also known to aid in the control of Bronchitis. Most people suffering from Bronchitis are advised to develop a regular exercise schedule as it helps strengthen the respiratory system.

Back massages are useful in separating phlegm, and if someone suffers from chronic bronchitis, it is recommended that he or she attends regular sessions with a massage therapist.
