Natural Cures

The kitchen is like a repository of natural cures for a number of ailments. The common cold itself cannot be treated but its symptoms may be alleviated to provide relief to the patient. Here is how to use some standard pantry supplies to cope with the common cold:

Lemon

Lemon is rich in vitamin C and increases the resistance power of the body which can effectively reduce the duration of the common cold.

Squeeze the juice of one lemon into a cup of hot water. One half of a teaspoon of honey may be added for taste. Sip this concoction while it is still hot to soothe a sore throat.
Cut one lemon into two halves and put both halves into a jug. Add two tablespoons of barley and fill the jug with boiling water. Allow the mixture to sit overnight and filter this mixture during the following morning. Drink the mixture throughout the day.
Pour some water into a pan and add sugar and lemon rinds. Boil the mixture until the sugar dissolves completely. Let the mixture cool and proceed to strain. Add lemon juice and sip the mixture throughout the day.

Garlic

Garlic is a miracle herb with antiseptic and antispasmodic properties. It contains oil that can help to open up respiratory passages and relieve the severity of the common cold.

Here is how garlic can be used:

Pour a cup of water into a pan and add three or four cloves of chopped garlic. Boil this mixture and add lemon juice and honey if desired. This may help to lower a fever.
Add a few drops of garlic oil to one teaspoonful of onion juice. Dilute this solution by adding one cup of water.

Ginger

Ginger is an effective remedy for colds and for fevers that result from colds.

Prepare a decoction by cutting ten grams of ginger into small pieces and boiling the pieces in one cup of water. Strain the mixture and add one half of a teaspoon of sugar or honey. This decoction should be consumed while hot.
Ginger tea, prepared by adding fresh ginger or a pinch of dry ginger powder into boiled water before adding the tea leaves, is also an effective treatment for the common cold.

Echinacea

Echinacea is a natural herb that is known to have antiviral effects and strengthen the immune system. Echinacea may be consumed as a tea or as a pill, and if taken in pill form the daily dosage should not exceed 500 milligrams.
