Symptoms of Conjunctivitis

The most common symptoms of conjunctivitis are redness, irritation and watery discharge from the eyes. Other symptoms may vary depending on the cause of conjunctivitis. Here are a few additional symptoms of conjunctivitis:

Blurry vision
Discomfort in the eye(s)
Swollen eyelids
Itchiness
Increased sensitivity to brightness or light (photophobia)
Burning sensation

Bacterial conjunctivitis is signified by a thick yellow discharge that causes stickiness around the eyes (typically followed after sleeping).

Preventing Conjunctivitis

Frequently wash hands with soap and water and be sure to scrub thoroughly.
Avoid touching or rubbing the eyes, particularly if the hands are not clean.
Avoid sharing eye drops, eye makeup, tissues, towels or bed sheets.
Replace eye makeup often. Products such as mascara should be replaced at least every three months.
Completely avoid using items that have been used by an infected person including wipes or tissues, towels, bed sheets, and contact lenses.
Follow your ophthalmologist's instructions concerning proper contact lens care.
Ensure that windows and doors are closed on days with high pollen counts if you are susceptible to allergic conjunctivitis.
If physical contact with any irritant has occurred, wash the eyes with cold water for 15 minutes.
Wear safety goggles when around toxic chemicals. Also wear eye protection in wind or heat and protect eyes from dirt or irritants.

 

Natural Cures

Many people trust in natural or herbal cures to alleviate conjunctivitis. Here are few treatments that can be used to cope with this pesky ailment:

Carrots

Carrots are rich in carotene, which is converted to Vitamin A by the human body. They are also highly beneficial for the eyes and they help to reduce any itch or soreness that is caused by common eye infections including conjunctivitis. Eat raw carrots, juice them or cook them in any way that is desired. Below are some suggestions:

Mix together carrot juice and spinach juice in three to two proportions respectively. Spinach is rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, calcium and antioxidants.
Blend 200 milliliters of parsley juice with 300 milliliters of carrot juice.
Another concoction may be created with 210 milliliters of carrot juice, 150 milliliters of celery juice, 60 milliliters of parsley juice, and 60 milliliters of endive juice.

Other cures

Wash the eyes with pure distilled rose water but beforehand, ensure that the rose water is pure and free from additives.
Make a poultice of grated apple or grated raw red potato and place it on your closed eye for half of an hour, once each day.
Add three drops of eyebright (herb) tincture to one tablespoon of just-boiled water. Bathe the eyes in this mixture once the mixture is cool enough to handle.
Chamomile tea can be used as a soothing eyewash. However, those who suffer from allergies to plants in the Matricaria or Artemisia genus (daisy family) should avoid this cure.
