Constipation

Symptoms of Constipation

As mentioned earlier, an adult may have bowel movements ranging from 3 to 21 movements per week, and these amounts are considered absolutely normal. An individual who is experiencing any or all of the following symptoms is said to be suffering from constipation:

Irregular bowel movement: Infrequent bowel movement, especially less than three times each week, is the primary symptom of constipation.
Difficulty in passing stool: Excessive and painful straining when passing stool, hard, dry and pellet-shaped stool, and bleeding from the anus when trying to defecate are all signs of constipation.
Gastric disorders: Constipation is usually an initial symptom of gastric disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and flatulence. However, these disorders can also be symptoms of constipation. People who are suffering from constipation often complain of gas, stomach ache, cramps or bloated sensation.
Other symptoms: Constipation may also be accompanied with headaches, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, bad breath and a foul taste in the mouth.

Preventing Conjunctivitis

Frequently wash hands with soap and water and be sure to scrub thoroughly.
Avoid touching or rubbing the eyes, particularly if the hands are not clean.
Avoid sharing eye drops, eye makeup, tissues, towels or bed sheets.
Replace eye makeup often. Products such as mascara should be replaced at least every three months.
Completely avoid using items that have been used by an infected person including wipes or tissues, towels, bed sheets, and contact lenses.
Follow your ophthalmologist's instructions concerning proper contact lens care.
Ensure that windows and doors are closed on days with high pollen counts if you are susceptible to allergic conjunctivitis.
If physical contact with any irritant has occurred, wash the eyes with cold water for 15 minutes.
Wear safety goggles when around toxic chemicals. Also wear eye protection in wind or heat and protect eyes from dirt or irritants.

Natural Cures

Honey

Honey has been used since the ancient times in numerous ways to relieve gastric problems including constipation. It is known to help the body to retain water and thus keep the feces moist as they move through the bowel. Here are some ways in which you can use honey to cure constipation:

Mix one teaspoon of honey and two tablespoons of lemon juice in a glass of warm water. Drink this mixture twice each day (once in the morning and once in the evening) until the bowel movement is regularized.
Mix one half of a teaspoon of honey into one half of a cup of water. Drink this mixture before meals until the bowel movements regularizes.
Add some honey to a glass of milk and drink twice each day.

Fruits

Fruits are rich in fiber, nutrients and minerals that can aid in treating constipation. Here is how to use fruits to cope with constipation.

Consume one half of a pear before every meal to cure temporary constipation.
Ripe guava, when consumed with seeds, provides significant fiber and can help to cure most gastric problems
Eat one or two oranges in the morning and at night to alleviate constipation.
Papaya has an established reputation for its laxative properties. Including one half of a papaya into breakfast each day can help to cure and prevent constipation.
Soak four to five dry figs in water overnight and consume them in the morning.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains fiber that aids in regularizing the bowel movement. Consume two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water twice each day to relieve constipation.

Diet, Lifestyle and Constipation

Constipation can have extremely negative effects on a person’s life. Avoid becoming constipated and feeling poorly each day by making a few lifestyle changes. Here are a few tips that can help:

Consume green leafy vegetables, legumes, bran, grains, fresh fruits, nuts, and seeds that are high in fiber. Complement this diet with a sufficient amount of water. However, please be advised that individuals who are suffering from severe flatulence and bloating in addition to constipation should lower their fiber intake until the gas subsides.
Eliminate processed foods, fried foods and sugar from the diet. These products lead to digestive problems and to obesity.
Avoid or minimize the intake of all dairy products because they are known to cause constipation, especially in children.
