Cough

Natural Cures

Treatment for cough is usually determined by the underlying cause of the symptom. However, there are some natural cures that may be used to alleviate cough.

Honey

Honey is a natural sweetener and it has a warming effect that can sooth irritated mucous membranes to relieve cough. Children who are younger than one year of age should not consume honey-based remedies. Here is how honey can be used to cure cough:

Mix one teaspoon of honey with a few drops of brandy and consume to cure a coughing fit.
Mix honey and lemon juice in equal proportions and consume one teaspoon of the mixture twice each day to moisten a dry throat and to relieve itchiness in the throat.
Mix one cup of grape juice with one teaspoon of honey and drink.
Add two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and two teaspoons of honey to a glass of water and drink this mixture before meals to relieve cough.

Onions

Raw onion can be used to cure cough. Here is how to use it:

Mix one teaspoon of raw onion juice with one teaspoon of honey. Allow the mixture to sit for three to four hours before it is consumed. This is an excellent cough syrup and should be consumed twice each day.
Crush one medium-sized onion, add the juice of one lemon, and pour one cup of boiling water over the onion-lemon combination. Sweeten the mixture with honey if desired and consume this concoction two or three times each day until the coughing subsides.

Vitamins and Herbs

There are some vitamins and herbs that are known to alleviate cough symptoms and provide relief.

Licorice may aid in treating cough and strengthening the immune system. Consume 500 milligrams of licorice each day until the cough subsides. Patients who have high blood pressure should not consume licorice.
Echinacea has the ability to strengthen the immune system and to reduce the amount of mucous in the body. Consume 500 milligrams of echinacea each day until the cough is relieved.
Vitamin C strengthens the immune system. Consume 500 to 1,000 milligrams of Vitamin C each day.

Diet and Tips for Relieving Cough

People who are suffering from cough should follow a balanced and nutritious diet including wholegrain cereals, fresh fruits and raw or lightly cooked vegetables. Avoid tea, coffee, refined or processed foods like white flour, white bread, pickles, condiments, soft drinks, ice creams, candies and foods that are high in sugar.

Here are some additional tips that can help to minimize the irritation that is caused by coughing:

Consume adequate fluids to maintain hydration in the throat. Sip on hot water, lemon juice or herbal teas.
Use extra pillows to elevate the head while sleeping because this can help to ease a dry cough.
Quit smoking.
Identify personal irritants and avoid them.

See a doctor immediately if the cough persists for more than two weeks or if the patient expels pink, frothy mucous or bloody mucous. An informed medical assessment will help to identify the underlying cause of cough and allow proper treatment.
