Dandruff

Symptoms of Dandruff

The symptoms of dandruff are very visible! White, oily flakes of dead skin cells that are nestled in hair, adorning clothes, and scattered on skin are unmistakable signs of dandruff. Irritation and soreness of the scalp, intense itching sensation, which causes more powdery flakes to fall off, and hair loss are also common symptoms of dandruff. Seborrhoeic dermatitis is an aggravated form of dandruff that affects the skin around the eyebrows, nose, ears, face, and forehead because these are areas where there are hair follicles and oil glands. The flakes may be white or yellow and oily in appearance and the affected area may be swollen, red, and crusty.

Preventing Dandruff

Dandruff may exacerbate if you have oily skin. Diet has some effect in the overall quality of hair and skin. Here are a few preventive measures that you may take to avoid dandruff:

Avoid or minimize your intake of caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, aerated drinks, pickles, refined and processed foods, meats, fried food, white flour-products, and sugar.
Drink plenty of water and increase your intake of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables.
Ensure that you have enough nutrients in your diet, especially zinc, beta-carotene, B6, B12, and selenium.
Maintain cleanliness in your scalp and hair. Use a mild shampoo to clean your hair and remember to thoroughly rinse the hair after shampooing.
Brush your hair daily to improve blood circulation in the scalp and to remove surface flakiness.
Protect your hair and scalp from extreme weather conditions. Wear a hat or scarf when exposed to the sun or when the weather outside is windy or chilly.

Natural Cures

Here are a few pantry staples that can be used to naturally cure dandruff.

Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seeds have antibacterial and antifungal properties and can be very helpful in treating dandruff. Here is how to use fenugreek seeds:

Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds overnight in plain water. Grind into a fine paste the following morning and apply this paste all over the scalp by using fingers to lightly massage the scalp. Keep the paste on for at least one half of an hour and wash it off with a mild shampoo.

Apple cider vinegar

The antifungal properties, the high acid content, and the enzymes that are present in apple cider vinegar can effectively eliminate the dandruff-causing fungus from the scalp. Here is how to use apple cider vinegar to cure dandruff

Mix one half of a cup of apple cider vinegar with one pint of warm water. Thoroughly rinse the hair with this vinegar-water mixture after it has been shampooed. Massage gently into the scalp, leave it on hair for a few minutes, and rinse it out with cool water.
Another remedy is to apply three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into your hair and massage into your scalp for a few minutes. Afterwards use a mild shampoo to wash off the vinegar.

A few more tips and tricks

Powder two regular aspirins and add the powder to the normal amount of shampoo that you use each time you wash your hair. Use this concoction to wash your hair. Leave it on for a few minutes, rinse, and again wash your hair with a regular (plain) shampoo.
For really stubborn dandruff, use your normal shampoo to wash hair and rinse with an alcohol-based mouthwash. Follow up with your regular conditioner so that your hair does not dry out.
