Diarrhea

Symptoms of Diabetes

Diarrhea symptoms can be divided between two categories: uncomplicated (or non-serious) diarrhea and complicated diarrhea. Complicated diarrhea may be a sign of a more serious illness that requires prompt medical intervention. See your doctor if you experience prolonged diarrhea or diarrhea that is accompanied by a fever that lasts more than 24 hours. Also see your doctor immediately if vomiting prevents you from consuming liquids such as oral rehydration solutions that can replace lost water and electrolytes.

Symptoms of uncomplicated (non-serious) diarrhea are watery, loose stools, intense urge to pass stools, possible bowel incontinence, abdominal bloating, pains, or cramps, nausea and vomiting, and dehydration.
Symptoms of complicated (serious) diarrhea are blood or mucus that is present in stools, fever, and weight loss.

Bananas

Bananas are rich in potassium, folate, and vitamin B6. They are bland, soft, and easy to digest, which makes bananas ideal for most intestinal disorders including diarrhea. According to the American College of Gastroenterology, consuming a banana after a bout of diarrhea is especially beneficial. The high potassium content in bananas aids in recovering the vital nutrients. Here are a few suggestions:

Include bananas in your daily diet. Toss one into your morning smoothie or slice it over your cereal, complement it with a cup of yogurt and a handful of berries, or make banana-peanut butter popsicles by dipping banana halves into peanut butter and freezing them for a delicious treat.
Cinnamon bark has a stimulating effect on the digestive system and it is greatly beneficial in treating several disorders of the gastrointestinal tract including stomach ulcers and diarrhea. Mix one teaspoon of nutmeg, one eighth of a teaspoon of cinnamon powder, one pinch of clove powder, and some honey into a cup of warm milk. Consume this concoction at meal times.
Ginger is renowned for its role in aiding digestion and it is also useful in treating diarrhea. Take one teaspoon of ginger root powder or grate a small chunk of fresh ginger root and add it to one cup of boiling water. Drink about three cups each day.

Dietary guidelines for Diarrhea:

Adopt a few simple changes in your diet to combat diarrhea:

Avoid solid foods for a couple of days and drink plenty of fluids including water, oral rehydration solutions (a pinch of sugar and salt dissolved in water), clear soups, tea, and juices.
When suffering from diarrhea, avoid fatty and fried foods, fiber-rich foods including vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, corn, cabbage, peas, dried beans, fruit seeds and skins, cereals including whole grain breads, and caffeinated beverages.
Avoid most dairy products including milk, cream, and butter. Yogurt, however, is an exception and should be consumed.
