Symptoms of Graying
Hair
At
the beginning of the graying process,
follicles produce colorless strands
that appear on the head in a random
pattern. The first gray or white strands
usually appear on the temples, above
the ears, and on top of the head. Hair
loss may also be observed. Eventually,
graying of hair occurs on the beard
and on the mustache. Gray hair on the
chest and pubic region generally only
occur some years after the onset of
gray hair on the scalp.
Natural Cures
Graying of hair is a
natural process and cannot be prevented
or reversed by any diet, herb, supplement,
or product. However, premature graying
of hair can be controlled with the use
of a few natural remedies.
Vitamins and minerals
Copper,
iron, and iodine are some of the nutrients
that may contribute to healthy and shiny
hair and a deficiency of these minerals
will lead to graying hair. For instance,
copper deficiency can result in a drop
in melanin production. Copper-rich foods
such as crab, oysters, sunflower seeds,
cashews, and almonds should be consumed
as a part of the daily dietary intake
to avoid copper deficiency. Seafood
and mushrooms are rich sources of iodine.
Use iodized salt instead of regular
table salt. Fortified cereals, beans,
dried fruits, and meat are good dietary
sources of iron. Vitamin C promotes
iron absorption, so it is beneficial
to combine iron-rich food with another
food source that is rich in vitamin
C.
Amla or Indian Gooseberry
Amla, also known as the “Indian
Gooseberry” (Emblica offinalis),
has been traditionally used in India
as a tonic for hair and several other
ailments. It is very rich in vitamin
C and it is believed to be a preventive
measure rather than a cure for graying
hair.

Soak
dried amla (Emblic myrobalan) pieces
or powder (available at health food
supply stores and Indian grocery
stores) in water overnight. Strain
the amla the next morning and apply
the liquid onto hair. Leave the
liquid on the hair for an hour and
wash it off with a mild shampoo. |
|
Combine lemon juice
with amla powder and apply the mixture
onto hair. Leave it on for a couple
of hours and afterwards wash it
off with a mild shampoo. Follow
this procedure every week. |
|
Mix two tablespoons
of henna powder with two tablespoons
of amla juice. Apply this paste
onto gray hair and allow it to dry
for 30-45 minutes. Wash the paste
out of the hair with a regular shampoo
and a conditioner. |
Other Natural
remedies
Use some
of the following remedies to prevent
graying hair. Please be advised that
hair that has already turned gray can
only be dyed (using natural or cosmetic
hair dyes) and cannot be restored to
its original color.
|
Create
a paste of two teaspoons of henna
powder, one teaspoon of yogurt,
one teaspoon of fenugreek seed powder,
three teaspoons of coffee powder
(ground coffee beans), two teaspoons
of basil juice, and three teaspoons
of mint juice. Apply this paste
to the hair while gently massaging
the scalp. Leave the paste on the
hair for three hours and afterwards
wash it off with a mild shampoo.
Follow up this treatment with a
nourishing conditioner. |
|
Massage the scalp
with coconut oil or almond oil to
improve blood circulation, to stimulate
the growth of healthy hair, and
to prevent premature graying of
hair. |
