Hangover

Symptoms of Hangover

Typically, the symptoms of hangover appear within several hours after the last drink is consumed. As indicated earlier, the symptoms may vary among individuals. The symptoms of hangover are weariness, dehydration, pain in the muscle and head, nausea, stomachache, giddiness, sensitivity to light and sound, rapid heartbeat, inability to stand steadily, lack of concentration, mood instability such as nervousness, depression, and frustration, difficulty falling asleep, and erratic motor functions.

Preventing Hangover

Drink sensibly to prevent hangover. Here are a few ways to prevent hangover:

Do not consume alcohol on an empty stomach. Nibble on foods that are rich in complex fat and protein to aid in metabolizing the alcohol you drink, such as cheese and nuts.
Drink slowly and in reasonable quantity. The body digests alcohol at a rate of nearly 30 milliliters (one ounce) per hour. If the body has more time to digest alcohol, the brain will not become as affected.
Avoid smoking while drinking. Smoking narrows the lungs and diminishes the amount of oxygen that flows to the bloodstream. The hangover is stronger when there is less oxygen.
Drink water or some other nonalcoholic beverage while consuming alcohol because it will decrease the temptation of drinking more alcohol. This will also aid in maintaining hydration.
Recognize limitations and know when to stop drinking.

Natural Cures

The joy of the previous night can easily be converted into the nightmare of the morning because of a hangover. Here are a few effective natural home remedies that are used for hangovers.

Bananas

Bananas are considered to be one the best cures for dehydration because they are very rich in potassium and essential nutrients. Eating a banana can help to cure hangover because it will help to restore the lost electrolytes and fluids that are depleted from the body due to vomiting, excessive urination, and sweating.

Ginger

Ginger has several healing properties and is used traditionally to treat nausea and dizziness. Here are a few suggestions:

Brew ginger tea by finely grating a chunk of fresh ginger root in four cups of boiling water. Let it stand for a few minutes. Strain and add the juice of one orange, one teaspoon of lemon juice, and one half of a cup of honey.
Chew on slivers of fresh ginger root to control nausea and indigestion.

Honey and lemon

A concoction made of honey, lemon, and hot water can replenish the fluids and sugars that are lost due to a hangover. However, do not substitute white sugar for honey because honey contains fructose, which is absorbed quickly and prevents the alcohol from being rapidly absorbed. Boil one cup of water and mix in honey and lemon juice. Drink this beverage several times throughout the day.
