High Blood Pressure

Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is also known as the “silent killer” because it is usually undetected. The individual who is suffering from high blood pressure is often not even aware of the ailment and may mistakenly think that it is fatigue or exhaustion. The symptoms of high blood pressure include severe headache, fatigue, disorientation, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, breathlessness, passing blood in urine, bleeding nose, vision problems, and dizziness.

Preventing High Blood Pressure

Some important changes in lifestyle can help to control and avoid high blood pressure. Here are a few suggestions:

Eat a healthy and balanced diet. Consume fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy foods. Minimize the intake of saturated fat and sodium. Use herbs and spices to flavor food instead of loading food with salt, butter, and cheese.
Lose weight if you are overweight. If you are not overweight, maintain your healthy body weight.
Include physical activity in your daily routine.
Exercise regularly.
Avoid excessive alcohol.
Quit smoking.
Learn to manage your stress (try yoga and meditation).

Natural Cures

Some of the following natural cures can be used to treat high blood pressure. Do not combine these cures with existing high blood pressure medication and consult your doctor before using any alternative therapy to treat hypertension.

Garlic

Garlic is believed to have properties that may lower cholesterol levels, prevent blood clots, and destroy plaque from arterial walls. Garlic also helps to ease the spasm of the small arteries and this reduces their pressure and tension. It also regularizes the pulse and heartbeats. Additionally, it can alleviate some of the other symptoms of high blood pressure such as dizziness and shortness of breath.

Clinical trials have been undertaken wherein individuals who were suffering from high blood pressure were given one clove of garlic every day for 12 weeks. At the end of the trial period it was noted that their diastolic blood pressure and cholesterol levels were significantly reduced. Garlic capsules can be also used to cope with high blood pressure. The recommended dosage is two to three capsules each day. Liberally use garlic to flavor your food to receive the heart-healthy benefit of garlic.

Potassium

Several studies indicate that a potassium-rich diet can help to significantly lower blood pressure. A potassium deficiency is believed to increase blood pressure. Consume foods that are rich in potassium such as bananas, beet greens, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, oranges, spinach, fat-free milk and yogurt, soy beans, lima beans, orange juice, and almonds. Eating three to six servings of these foods would provide a sufficient potassium intake and regulate blood pressure.

Additional remedies

Potatoes are believed to be effective in lowering blood pressure. Be sure to prepare potatoes in a healthy manner. Bake, boil, or steam potatoes and avoid deep frying. Remember to season potatoes with herbs and limit the use of salt. Baked potatoes, roasted potatoes, or mashed potatoes are healthy and delicious ways to prepare potatoes.
Simmer a bunch of fresh parsley leaves in 250 milliliters of boiling water. Consume this concoction several times each day to cure hypertension.
