Stomach Ulcers

Symptoms of Stomach Ulcers

Common symptoms that are associated with stomach ulcers are a burning or gnawing feeling in the stomach area that endures for up to three hours, intermittent pain in the abdomen, pain in the stomach area during a meal, immediately after the meal, or in some cases several hours after eating, indigestion, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, anemia, and in rare cases bloody stools or bloody vomit.

Natural Cures

In addition to over-the-counter and prescription medications, there are several natural remedies that are effective in preventing, controlling, and sometimes curing stomach ulcers. Here are a few natural cures:

Cabbage

The glutamine that is present in fresh cabbage can help to heal stomach ulcers. It also has amino acid that increases blood flow to the lining of the stomach and helps to strengthen it. Drinking a cup of fresh cabbage juice four times each day for ten days can heal stomach ulcers. Shred raw cabbage and eat it in salads, coleslaw, or sandwiches or purchase dehydrated, raw cabbage powder from natural food stores and include it in your diet.

Chamomile

Chamomile has a soothing effect on inflamed and irritated mucus membranes. It also contains a high amount of the flavonoid apigenin, which under clinical trials have retarded the growth of ulcer-causing bacteria. Brew strong chamomile tea and consume two to three cups of this tea every day. Prepare the tea by steeping two to three teaspoons of chamomile flowers in boiling water. Let it steep for 15 minutes, strain, and drink this while it is still hot.

Bananas

Bananas contain an antibacterial substance that may inhibit the growth of ulcer-causing H. pylori bacteria. Bananas are also believed to lead to thicker stomach lining and greater production of mucus in the stomach, which may help to build a better barrier between digestive acids and the lining of the stomach. Plantains also work in a similar manner and are believed to have anti-inflammatory and healing properties.

Licorice Root

Licorice root is known for its abilities to strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and increase the production of beneficial mucous layers in the body. To obtain the benefits of licorice root, chew approximately 1,000 milligrams about 30 minutes before consuming each meal.

Lifestyle and Stomach Ulcers:

Preventing excessive formation of acids is an important key to prevent stomach ulcers. Certain changes in your lifestyle may help you to do so. Here are some useful tips:
Avoid anti-inflammatory drugs as often as possible.
Avoid cigarettes, tobacco, and alcohol.
Do not consume tea, coffee, and other such caffeinated products.
Maintain a healthy diet and avoid extremely spicy foods.
Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Do not remain hungry for long hours.
Try some relaxation techniques, such as yoga, meditation, or tai chi, to prevent exacerbation of stomach ulcers.
