Burns

Everyone has suffered from a burn at some point, whether it resulted from spilling hot coffee, using water that was too hot to wash up, or removing a cake from the oven without any protection. Burns are damages to skin tissue that are caused when the skin is exposed to extreme conditions such as heat, chemicals, electricity, sunlight or radiation.

Causes and Risk Factors

Burns occur when the skin experiences an extremity that removes the essential moisture from the skin and injures it. Some of the common factors that can lead to a burn are:

Heat: This is the most common factor that can cause a burn. A burn from heat can develop while cooking, lighting a fire or even during a sauna bath. These burns are called Heat/Thermal burns and are caused from fire, steam, hot objects and liquids.
Electricity: Severe electric shocks can lead to the development of burns. These burns are known as Electrical burns and their sources are electrical appliances or lightening. Electricians or individuals who must handle electric appliances on a regular basis have a higher risk of developing burns.
Radiation: Carelessness while using a tanning booth or while sunbathing can lead to a Radiation burn. Radiation therapy that is used for cancer treatment and X-rays can also result in these burns.
Chemicals: The handling of household cleaners or other hazardous substances such as those containing toxic chemicals may cause chemical burns. Those who handle such chemicals on a routine basis are susceptible to the development of chemical burns.
