Headaches

Symptoms of Headaches

The symptoms of headaches may include pain in the generalized area of head and neck, sensitivity to light and sound, irritability, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, exhaustion, general malaise, burning sensation in the eyes, and pain in the jaw. Not all of these symptoms can occur at the same time. Chronic, long-lasting, and debilitating headaches should be treated by a medical professional.

Preventing Headaches

A few lifestyle changes can reduce the chances of developing a headache, reduce the frequency of headaches, and help to diminish the intensity of throbbing headaches. Here are a few suggestions:

Limit alcohol and nicotine consumption. Ideally, quit smoking.
Learn to manage stress by practicing relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and yoga.
Exercise regularly.
Ensure that you obtain an adequate amount of sleep each night.
Maintain a healthy and balanced diet.
Recogize what incites your headaches and avoid these conditions in the future.

Natural Cures

Try the following natural cures to treat your occasional headache. If the headaches are frequent or severe, discuss them with a medical professional.

Hot, cold, or herbal compress

Dip a soft washcloth in ice-cold water and place it over the eyes or place an ice pack over the forehead or anywhere on the head where you experience pain. It is crucial to try this cure as soon as the symptoms of headache are experienced or the condition will aggravate and the cold compress will not soothe the pain.

If you are not comfortable using ice or you cannot tolerate subzero temperatures, consider placing a warm washcloth that has been dipped in hot water over your eyes or on the site of the pain. The warmth relaxes the strained muscles. Ideally, the hot/warm compress should be left on for at least 30 minutes. Intermittently dip the washcloth in hot water to retain heat in the washcloth.

You may also use herbal compresses to cure headaches. The essential oils of peppermint, eucalyptus, and lavender can be used to make an excellent compress to place on the forehead whenever a headache occurs. Infuse a couple of drops of essential oil of any of these herbs in hot or ice-cold water and use it as you would use a hot or cold compress. Most headaches respond best to a cold compress, but you may find that a warm or hot compress, or alternating cold and hot compresses, is even more beneficial.

Ginger

Ginger has several beneficial properties and is used to treat a variety of ailments. It also contains a small amount of antihistamine and anti-inflammatory action that is believed to be useful in treating headaches. Moreover, ginger relaxes blood vessels in the head and reduces swelling in the brain. It also activates natural opiates in the brain that relieve pain. Here are a few suggestions for using this remedy to cure headaches:

Steep two tablespoons of freshly grated ginger root in hot water. Strain and add one tablespoon of honey. Drink this soothing tea two to three times each day.

Herbs

Aromatherapy is also used extensively to promote relaxation and to relieve stress and pain. Therapists recommend that patients should not only inhale the aroma of essential herbal oils, but should also use a drop or two of these oils to massage the temples, forehead, back of neck, and behind ears. Chamomile, cinnamon, lavender, lemon, marjoram, peppermint, and valerian are some of the herbs that are renowned for their pain-relieving, relaxant, and stress-relieving properties.
